English
Our Vision
-
We aim to support learners to grow in confidence and resilience so they make sustained progress in their learning journey.
-
Students follow a curriculum which supports achievement by building on prior knowledge and becoming increasingly confident in applying their skills. In Year 10, Literature and Language are taught side by side, with students developing secure foundations in analysis, writing, and retrieval. In Year 11, students study the poetry anthology, complete the course, and consolidate prior knowledge through structured revision and recall.
-
Our curriculum is ambitious and inclusive. All students, including those who are disadvantaged or have SEND, access the same curriculum, with scaffolds and targeted support to remove barriers to learning. We aim to provide timely interventions and tailored pathways so all students experience success.
-
We are committed to planning lessons with clear structure, consistent routines, and explicit metacognitive strategies. Retrieval practice is embedded both within lessons and across long-term planning, enabling knowledge to be secured in long-term memory. Students are given regular opportunities to succeed, to act on feedback, and to grow in confidence as readers, writers, and speakers.
-
We want students to develop a love of reading, the ability to write with creativity and precision, and the confidence to speak with clarity and conviction. We want them to become critical thinkers who engage with wider themes and issues, recognising how English connects with the world around them and supports their future progression.
Our Way
-
Student confidence and resilience are built through routine approaches to both short- and long-term learning.
-
Literature and Language units run in parallel to secure clear progression and transferable skills.
-
Schemes of work and lessons are collaboratively designed, then adapted to meet the needs of each group.
-
Lesson structures include:
-
Independent reading opportunities to nurture long-term reading habits.
-
Daily retrieval practice through “Quote of the Day” and “Word of the Day.”
-
Structured and modelled analysis to demonstrate how meaning is built in texts.
-
Opportunities to review, revise, and proof-read to strengthen technical accuracy.
-
Key vocabulary taught explicitly through word lists and classroom practice.
-
Scaffolded exemplars and sentence structures to build resilience in extended writing.
-
Regular use of visualisers to model high-quality responses and foster a supportive classroom community.
-
Weekly exposure to exam-style questions with modelled and scaffolded support.
-
Student-friendly mark schemes, structured feedback, and opportunities for redrafting.
-
Question Level Analysis (QLA) used after assessments to identify strengths and inform next steps.
-
Clear reading and writing strategies, such as What/How/Why and Paragraph Point Plans, to support self-belief and independence.
-
Interleaving across Reading, Writing, and Literature to build confidence and long-term retention.
-
Out-of-hours interventions and resources provided where additional support is needed.
Our Goal
-
We measure the success of our curriculum through regular formative assessment, summative assessments, and QLA analysis, alongside student reflections and teacher feedback.
-
By the end of Year 11, students will have:
- A secure knowledge of the core texts and the ability to recall and analyse them with confidence.
- The ability to write accurately, fluently, and creatively across a range of tasks.
- The confidence to speak with clarity and conviction in formal and informal settings.
- The resilience and independence to tackle unfamiliar texts and challenging exam tasks.
- The passion for reading, writing, and thinking critically that will support them in further study and beyond.
