The Design & Technology curriculum equips students with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to succeed in further education, apprenticeships and employment. Through a broad range of vocational and creative subjects, students develop independence, resilience, creativity and problem-solving skills while producing work they are proud of. 

Our curriculum offers multiple pathways to success at Key Stages 4 and 5, including Hospitality & Catering, Hairdressing, Home Cooking Skills, Construction, Engineering, Construction and the Built Environment, Engineering & Mechanics and 3D Design. Alongside Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, Level 1 courses provide valuable opportunities for students to develop confidence, practical skills and a positive relationship with learning before progressing to the next stage of their education. 

Learning is carefully sequenced so that students build knowledge and practical competence over time. Lessons combine theory with meaningful practical experiences, enabling students to understand not only how to complete tasks but why professional techniques, processes and standards are important. 

We create classrooms, workshops, kitchens, and salons where students feel safe, valued and supported. High expectations, positive relationships and consistent routines allow every learner to develop confidence, take risks in their learning and celebrate success. Practical work encourages collaboration, independence and resilience, helping students grow both personally and academically. 

Careers education is embedded throughout the curriculum. Students work on realistic vocational projects, develop professional portfolios and gain an understanding of industry expectations, progression routes and transferable employability skills. Strong links to further education, apprenticeships and employment ensure students recognise the value and purpose of their learning. 

Across all courses, literacy is developed through technical vocabulary, communication and evaluation, while numeracy is applied through measurement, costing, calculations, proportions and data interpretation. These essential skills are embedded naturally within practical learning and prepare students for the workplace and everyday life. 

Teaching combines modelling, practical demonstration, guided practice and independent application. Learning is carefully scaffolded through visual resources, worked examples, structured tasks and regular opportunities to practise and refine new skills. 

Teachers continually assess learning through effective questioning, retrieval practice, observation of practical work and regular formative assessment. Feedback is timely and purposeful, enabling students to reflect, improve and make sustained progress throughout their course.
