Our Vision
The A-Level Biology curriculum inspires students to develop curiosity about the living world while building a deep understanding of biological principles, scientific enquiry, and the impact of biology on society. Students gain the knowledge, practical skills, and analytical thinking required for higher education, careers in science and healthcare, and informed participation in discussions surrounding global biological challenges.
The AQA A-Level Biology course builds upon GCSE foundations and develops students’ understanding of biological systems through a carefully sequenced programme of study. Students explore key topics including biological molecules, cells, exchange and transport systems, genetics and evolution, energy transfer, responses to environmental change, biodiversity, ecosystems, and gene expression. Alongside theoretical knowledge, students develop practical and investigative skills that underpin scientific understanding.
The curriculum progresses from molecular and cellular biology to larger-scale biological processes, enabling students to make meaningful connections across different areas of the subject. Our aim is to develop scientifically literate individuals who can evaluate evidence, solve complex problems, and appreciate the role of biological research in improving lives and protecting the environment.
Our Way
Lessons are carefully designed to ensure all students can access challenging content and make sustained progress. Knowledge is built systematically through retrieval practice, explicit instruction, modelling, questioning, guided practice, and independent application. Complex biological concepts are broken down into manageable steps to secure understanding before students are challenged to apply their learning in unfamiliar contexts.
Practical investigations are central to the curriculum and enable students to develop scientific enquiry skills while understanding how biological knowledge is generated through experimentation. Scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and regularly revisited to support accurate communication, while exam-style questions develop analytical, evaluative, and extended writing skills.
Formative assessment is embedded throughout the curriculum through retrieval quizzes, questioning, discussions, practical activities, and examination tasks. These strategies allow teachers to identify misconceptions and adapt teaching accordingly. Students receive regular feedback through verbal guidance, written comments, whole-class feedback, and personalised targets. Opportunities for self-assessment and reflection encourage students to take ownership of their learning and continuously improve their performance.
A positive and inclusive learning environment ensures students feel safe, respected, and confident in contributing to lessons. High expectations, clear routines, and supportive teacher-student relationships promote engagement, resilience, and independence. Progress is closely monitored, with targeted intervention and support provided when required. Enrichment opportunities, including wider reading, scientific lectures, competitions, and practical experiences, extend learning beyond the classroom and foster a lifelong interest in biology.
Our Goal
By the end of the course, students possess a secure understanding of key biological concepts and the practical skills required to investigate scientific questions confidently. They can analyse and evaluate evidence, communicate scientific ideas effectively, apply mathematical and analytical skills, and make informed judgements about biological issues affecting society.
Students develop resilience, curiosity, independence, and a commitment to scientific integrity through practical work, problem-solving, and critical thinking. They are equipped to succeed in higher education and are well prepared for careers in medicine, dentistry, nursing, veterinary science, physiotherapy, biomedical science, pharmacology, biotechnology, environmental science, conservation, forensic science, teaching, and scientific research.
Ultimately, students leave A-Level Biology as confident, knowledgeable, and scientifically literate individuals, ready to contribute positively to an increasingly scientific and technologically advanced world.
