Supporting Student Progress

The curriculum at Basildon Upper Academy is well thought out. It is carefully planned with staff from the Basildon Lower Academy. These plans identify what pupils need to know. It breaks down this knowledge into manageable chunks so that pupils can build on previous knowledge securely. There are frequent checks on what pupils have learned.

At the Basildon Upper Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every student makes strong progress and achieves their full potential. Student achievement is carefully monitored through our Pupil Progress system, which enables teachers and leaders to track attainment, identify strengths and address barriers to learning at the earliest opportunity.

Using a range of assessment information, teachers regularly review student progress and adapt their teaching to meet the needs of individual learners. This ensures that support, challenge and intervention can be provided promptly where required.

Every student has an Individualised Learning Plan which identifies their specific needs, strengths and next steps for development. These plans enable staff to provide targeted support and ensure that appropriate strategies are in place to help students succeed both academically and personally.

Students complete formal assessments bi-annually and other forms of assessment take place throughout the academic year, providing valuable information about their progress within each subject. Following assessment points, parents and carers receive updates on their child's achievement and are given opportunities to discuss progress and next steps with academy staff.

Where additional support is required, targeted intervention programmes are implemented to address gaps in knowledge, strengthen confidence and accelerate progress. By combining high-quality teaching, effective use of assessment information and personalised support, we strive to remove barriers to learning and ensure that every student can thrive.

Support may include:

  • Subject-specific intervention sessions before, during and after the academy day.

  • Homework and independent learning support to strengthen knowledge, skills and study habits.

  • Saturday School and holiday revision programmes, providing additional opportunities for learning and academic support.

  • Digital learning platforms and online resources that enable students to access learning beyond the classroom and develop independent study skills.

  • Dedicated Student Development Teams, who work closely with students, families and staff to promote attendance, engagement and academic success.

  • Pastoral support and wellbeing provision, helping students to develop resilience, confidence and positive mental health.

  • Partnerships with external agencies and specialist services, providing additional support where required.
