Honouring VE Day

Students Reflect on 80 Years Since Victory in Europe.

Last week, our school community came together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day — a landmark moment marking the end of World War II in Europe.

At 12 midday on Thursday 8th May, the school observed a two-minute silence to honour the courage, service, and sacrifice of those who fought for peace across the continent. The moment was an opportunity for reflection and unity among students and staff.

To mark the occasion, students created a thoughtful and visually striking display in the reception area. Among the contributions was a moving excerpt from a letter written by Jean Rees, a 101-year-old former member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service. In the letter, she shared her personal memories of serving during the war and witnessing the announcement of peace on VE Day — a poignant reminder of the human stories behind this historic event.

“It’s important to celebrate VE Day to remember all the lives lost during the war, but also to recognise the victory in Europe and honour everyone who fought.” Lee.M

“VE Day matters because it reminds us to acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifices made by our troops — and to remember them with gratitude.” Jessica.N

“VE Day is important as it gives us a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made by previous generations. They fought hard so that we could live the way we do today.” Boglarka.B
